Take your weaving skills to the next level with this workshop, where Siobhan Kelleher from Boston Wool Works will guide you through making a set of four coordinated hand towels while learning techniques such as calculating yarn required for a project, multiple color warps and wefts, hem stitching, waffle weave, and wet finishing/washing. Because of the techniques we’re using, you will literally walk away with four completed towels that just need to be washed! In addition, you will learn to make color and design decisions and apply your skills to a final “weaver’s choice” towel where you choose your favorite techniques to make a unique towel.
You can use your own rigid heddle loom or borrow one from the shop.
Pre-requisite: Intro to Traditional Weaving workshop or equivalent experience (to be confirmed by the instructor).
Materials needed (all others will be provided by the shop or the teacher):
-
3 skeins of Nako Denim yarn, one dark, one light, one accent (however you choose to interpret those!)
-
Calculator (the one on your smart phone is fine)
-
If you bring your own loom (should be at least 10” wide), please be sure to bring an 8-dent reed, threading hook, clamps, warping peg, and two shuttles.
This 2-session class (July 28 & August 4) combines a general weaving introduction with hands-on setup and weaving techniques.
In the 1st class, you will be coached through direct-warping (with the included peg) the rigid heddle loom and be starting to weave before you leave the first session.
In the 2nd session, there’ll be a review, discuss additional techniques and problem-solving as desired, including managing neat selvedges, choosing appropriate yarns for particular projects, calculating yarn requirements, removing the project from the loom, and wet finishing woven fabric, amongst others.
Registration cost does not include materials.

This class is held in two sessions, Sundays April 28 and May 5.
In this class, we’ll learn the specifics of setting up and weaving on a rigid heddle loom. These concepts will also be taught in the larger context of weaving that’s been practiced in numerous cultures for thousands of years. You’ll learn some of the basic terminology and approaches which apply to a variety of looms, so you can choose to build on this knowledge with multi-shaft or tapestry looms in future workshops.
In this hands-on workshop you’ll learn to direct-warp yarn onto your loom, weave (including exploring techniques like clasped weft and simple lace), and remove the sample piece from the loom, and we’ll talk through weaving math, planning projects, and wet finishing.
Materials: We will provide a 10″ rigid heddle loom you can take home between sessions (please note that if you break or damage the loom, you are responsible for the replacement cost). You will need warping and weaving materials; we recommend that you bring 2-4 partial or full balls of sock-weight, fingering, or worsted weight yarn.

Meets twice – Sunday Feb 4th and 11th from 10:30 am to 1 pm
You’ll put multiple warps on your loom over the course of the two sessions (and at home in between if you like!) and will gain a much higher comfort level with this process than can be obtained in an introduction. The workshop will include variations on direct warping (with the peg), indirect warping (with a warping board), and additional tools and techniques to help with the process of setting up your loom, including tricks for working with mixed fibers. Pre-requisite: Intro to Traditional Weaving or equivalent experience.
